Antica ed assai nobile famiglia sarda, conosciuta come Nieddu o Niedda, variazioni di genere di un unico cognome riferito all'omonimo aggettivo dialettale con il significato di "nero/a, di carnagione scura", di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni di Italia e del Mondo. La famiglia era divisa in due rami principali: l'uno residente a Nuoro, che ottenne la nobiltà nel 1698, e l'altro residente in Buddusò, con il titolo di conti di S. Margherita. Con diploma, in data 30 agosto 1774, Vittorio Amedeo III, re di Sardegna, infatti, approvava il contratto stipulato fra l'Intendente Generale e Conservatore Generale del Tabellione in Sardegna e Gavino N., di Buddusò, dottore collegiato di leggi nella R. Università di Cagliari; in seguito, coi diplomi in data 4 ott. 1777, gli furono concessi i titoli di cavaliere e di nobile, trasmissibili ai suoi figli e discendenti maschi. Poscia il re

Di rosso a due leoni d'oro affrontati e controrampanti, sostenenti una ruota dello stesso; sormontata da una cometa d'argento, i leoni poggiati sulla pianura di argento, ombrata di verde; col capo cucito d'azzurro alla montagna d'oro addestrata da un uccello dello stesso volante verso la sommità della montagna.
