I Nievo erano già ricchi e potenti fino dai tempi dei tiranni dominatori di Vicenza, Verona e Padova, quando sulla fine del secolo XII Balzanello Nievo, recatosi a Verona, venne ucciso proditoriamente dalla fazione avversaria. Da quell'epoca i Nievo si trasferirono a Vicenza e resero segnalati servigi alla loro patria quando venne assalita dai Carraresi. Alessandro era uno dei componenti il nobile Consiglio di Vicenza negli anni 1544, 1547, 1548 ed un Marco vi si trova iscritto nell'anno 1766. la contea di Montechio Precalcino e Porciletto con Meriganza, conferita in feudo dai vescovi di Vicenza, in quei tempi principi anche nel temporale, il 1 maggio 1352 fu conferita a Gregorio di Balzanello ed il titolo comitale fu sempre attribuito nelle susseguenti investiture feudali episcopali non solo, ma venne anche riconosciuto dai Provveditori sopra feudi della Repubblica veneta con le investiture 9 agosto 1628, 26 marzo 1704, e 17 giugno 1729,
