Antica ed assai nobile famiglia, originaria di Genova, detta Nigro, Nigri o Lo Nigro, passata a risiedere in Sicilia. La casata fu illustrata da quell’Antonino, dottore in leggi, che fu giudice pretoriano di Palermo nell’anno 1686, giudice della Gran Corte del Regno nel 1693, giudice del tribunale del Concistoro nel 1696, capo della giunta dei beni confiscati, giudice privativo della Scala Franca e della regia secrezia e dogana di Messina nell’anno 1699, avvocato fiscale del tribunale della Gran Corte nel 1704, maestro razionale del tribunale del Real Patrimonio e presidente del tribunale del Concistoro nel 1714. È pure degno di nota un altro Antonino, dottore in leggi, giudice della corte pretoriana di Palermo nel 1761, del tribunale del Concistoro negli anni 1773-74-75 e giudice della Gran Corte Civile nel 1786. Altro ramo. Antica famiglia ispanica, la cui nobiltà è provata dalla presenza dei suoi membri, negli ordini cavallereschi di Calatrava,
