L'antica patria di questa celebre famiglia fu il diruto castello di Semifonte, dopo la distruzione del quale Bonsignore dei Nitti andò peregrinando pei luoghi santi e devotamente morì in Palestina. Bonsignore, suo figlio, trapiantò in Firenze la propria famiglia, e da lui nacque Maffero, il quale conseguì il priorato ne 1283. A lui successero in quella crica atlri 46 della sua casa fino al 1530, mentre 13 di essi furono gonfalonieri di giustizia. Neri, nipote e figlio del precedente, procreò Pietro, Luigi, Francesco e Buonaccorso, che divisero la famiglia in quattro rami, tutti potenti per dovizie, cariche sostenute, e preminenza negli affari della patria. Molti furono podestà in diversi luoghi, altri ambasciatori al Papa ed alle Corti sovrane, altri senatori, consiglieri ducali ecc. Né mancarono esimi letterati e prodi capitani, i quali maggiormente illustrarono la famiglia per lo più partigiana della case de' Medici.
