Cognome di origine portoghese. Discende dalle illustri famiglie di Alcurnia. A Tavira c'era una famiglia N., che proveniva da Manuel Martínez N., che prestò servizio in Africa, dove mostrò grande audacia nella conquista di una piazza, che fece esclamare il re, dopo aver appreso la notizia: "Nobile era ciò che fu fatto" . Da qui hanno origine il cognome e le armi che alludono all'atto. Queste armi furono usate dai nobili di Tavira, che passarono per lettera di successione il 27 giugno 1671 al capitano Manuel N. de Canelas.
