Há, possivelmente, em Portugal, várias famílias deste apelido, originário de alcunha. Em Tavira houve uma família N., que se diz ter começado em Manuel Martins N., que serviu esforçadamente em África onde mostrou grande ousadia na tomada e uma praça dizendo o Rei, ao saber a nova: "Nobre foi o feito". De aqui se teriam originado o apelido e as armas alusivas ao facto. Estas armas forma usadas pelos Nobres de Tavira, de que se passou Carta de sucessão em 27 de Junho de 1671 ao capitão Manuel N. de Canelas Timbre: Um braço armado de prata com a mão de carnação com uma cabeça de mouro pendurada pelos cabelos.
