Antigua e ilustre familia de notarios italianos, de clara y ancestral virtud, esparcida a lo largo de los siglos en diversas regiones de Europa y del mundo. Cuenta la tradición que tomó su apellido de un progenitor, cuyo nombre o apellido era Giacomo y que ejercía de notario. Sin embargo, es difícil decir que este progenitor es el envuelto en misterio Notar Giacomo, presunto autor de la "Cronica di Napoli". Más heráldicamente, es probable que la familia que nos ocupa descienda del noble Giacomo di Messina, atestiguado desde los albores del siglo XIV, y un exponente, notario de profesión, podría haber dado lugar a otras ramas de la familia.
