Antigua e ilustre familia de notarios italianos, de clara y ancestral virtud, esparcida a lo largo de los siglos en diversas regiones de Europa y del mundo. Cuenta la tradición que tomó su apellido de un progenitor, cuyo nombre o apellido era Giacomo y que ejercía de notario. Sin embargo, es difícil decir que este progenitor es el envuelto en misterio Notar Giacomo, presunto autor de la "Cronica di Napoli".
