Ancienne et très noble famille du Royaume des Deux-Siciles, de vertu claire et ancestrale, qui s'est répandue au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. Selon les rapports de l'historien et généalogiste du XVIIe siècle Filadelfo Mugnos, les premiers personnages que nous connaissons sont les messieurs de Palerme Nicolò et Giacomo (di) Noto, père et fils, originaires de la ville de Noto, qui ont servi à Naples sous le roi Alfonso et dont ils reçurent diverses compensations en 1438. Leurs descendants se ramifièrent tant à Messine qu'à Malte. Un Bernardo fut successivement capitaine de justice de Salemi en 1553-54 ; un Alessandro Noto e Diaz, chanoine de la cathédrale de Palerme, fut nommé maître de cérémonie de Francesco Gaetani, duc de Sermoneta et vice-roi de Sicile le 8 mars 1663 ; un médecin Giovan Battista, acheta le fief de Petraro en 1694, dont il obtint l'investiture le 4 mai 1696
