Antiga e mui nobre família do Reino das Duas Sicílias, de clara e ancestral virtude, que se propagou ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália. Segundo relatos do historiador e genealogista do século XVII Filadelfo Mugnos, os primeiros personagens que conhecemos são os senhores de Palermo Nicolò e Giacomo (di) Noto, pai e filho, originários da cidade de Noto, que serviram em Nápoles sob o rei Alfonso e de quem receberam várias compensações em 1438. Seus descendentes se ramificaram tanto em Messina quanto em Malta.
