Antica ed assai nobile famiglia del Regno delle Due Sicilie, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Secondo quanto riporta lo storico e genealogista del XVII secolo Filadelfo Mugnos, i primi personaggi di cui si ha notizia sono i gentiluomini palermitani Nicolò e Giacomo (di) Noto, padre e figlio, originari della città di Noto, i quali servirono in Napoli sotto re Alfonso e da cui ricevettero vari compensi nel 1438. I loro discendenti diramarono tanto in Messina quanto in Malta. Un Bernardo fu successivamente capitano di giustizia di Salemi nel 1553-54; un Alessandro Noto e Diaz, canonico della cattedrale di Palermo, fu nominato in data 8 marzo 1663 maestro di cerimonie di Francesco Gaetani, duca di Sermoneta e viceré di Sicilia; un dottor Giovan Battista, acquistò nel 1694 il feudo Petraro, del quale ottenne investitura il 4 maggio 1696; un Andrea Noto, figlio
