Originaria della città omonima, dove era conosciuta sotto il nome di Ploti. Bertolino de' Ploti, detto da Novara, celebre architetto del XIV secolo, fu quegli che dopo aver disegnato il piano del castello ducale di Ferrara quivi stabilì la sua famiglia la quale dette alla nuova patria egregi cittadini. Domenico-Maria, eccellente matematico ed astronomo del XV secolo; Antonio-Maria professore di diritto nell'Università di Ferrara; Gaetano oratore, filosofo e poeta del XVIII secolo. Con Agostino, giudice dei Savi, morto nel 1787, rimase estinta questa nobile famiglia che dal governo pontificio era stata noverata fra le 27 case nobili di perpetuo consiglio e che fu signora di Odalengo piccolo nel Monferrato.
