Antichissima famiglia di Chieri, di un ceppo con i Balbo, senza che se ne conosca l'attacco. Diramò largamente dando luogo a più linee. Linea di Sambuy. E' la primogenita della schiatta, iniziatasi con Bertone, vivente nel sec. XIII, e che le diede il nome differenziatore. I suoi discendenti compaiono già signori di Revigliasco e di Sambuy nei secoli XIV e XV. Bartolomeo, che ne é investito nel 1448, fu padre di Egidio o Luigi, capostipite della linea francese di Crillon, e di Aimoneto. Si distaccano da queste generazioni le estinte linee di Pavarolo, di Revigliasco e di Mombello. Con Giulio Cesare, morto a Casale l'11 febbr. 1754, si inizia la serie degli uomini più illustri della casata, poiché egli stesso fu governatore di Valenza (1739), di Susa (1743), di Casale (1747), generale di fanteria (1747) e cavaliere dell'Ordine Supremo dell'Annunziata.
