Família muito antiga que os genealogistas fazem provir de Pedro de Oliveira senhor do paço de Oliveira, em Santa Maria de Oliveira, no termo de Arcos de Valdevez, casado com Elvira Anes Pestana, filha de João Pestana, o Moço, da qual teve: D. Martim Pires de Oliveira, Arcebispo de Braga que instituiu o Morgado de Oliveira no ano de 1350 para seu irmão Pedro e deixou geração ilegítima; Pedro Pires de Oliveira, Senhor do Morgado de Sobrado ou de Vale de Sobrados, que instituiu e nele nomeou D. Rodrigo, Bispo de Lamego, filho de seu tio D. Martinho, e que se recebeu com D. Mor Mendes, de quem deixou filhos; Mem Pires de Oliveira, nomeado em primeiro lugar para administrar o vínculo de Oliveira, casado com Guiomar Martins, com geração; João Pires, que sucederia na administração do Morgado, depois de extinta a linha do primeiro chamado; e várias filhas. De uns e outros ficou ilustre descendência, o ramo primogénito da qual, que sucedeu nesse grande Morgado de Oliveira, junto a Évora, se ligou aos Saldanhas, dando origem aos Saldanha Oliveira e Sousa, Condes e Marqueses de Rio Maior, dos quais saíram os Condes de Almoster, Duques de Saldanha. Timbre: a oliveira do escudo. De azur, com cinco crescentes de prata, postos em sautor. Alias: De vermelho com uma oliveira de verde, perfilada e frutada de ouro, arrancada de prata.
