Familia muy antigua que los genealogistas proceden de Pedro de Oliveira, señor del Paço de Oliveira, en Santa María de Oliveira, en el término de Arcos de Valdevez, casado con Elvira Anes Pestana, hija de João Pestana, Moço, de quien tuvo: D Martim Pires de Oliveira, arzobispo de Braga que instituyó Morgado de Oliveira en 1350 para su hermano Pedro y dejó una generación ilegítima; Pedro Pires de Oliveira, señor de Morgado de Sobrado o Vale de Sobrados, quien lo instituyó y lo nombró D. Rodrigo, obispo de Lamego, hijo de su tío D. Martinho, y que fue recibido con D. Mor Mendes, de quien dejó niños; Mem Pires de Oliveira, nombrada primero para administrar el vínculo de Oliveira, casada con Guiomar Martins, con generación; João Pires, quien tendría éxito en la administración de Morgado, después de que la línea de la primera llamada se extinguiera; y varias hijas De uno y otro había una descendencia ilustre, la rama primogénita de la cual, que tuvo éxito en este gran Morgado de Oliveira, cerca de Évora, se unió a las Saldanhas, dando lugar a la Saldanha Oliveira e Sousa, Condes y Marqueses de Rio Maior, de quienes el Condes de Almoster, duques de Saldanha.
