Con distinta ortografía se ha apellidado esta familia. En documentos de los siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII aparece generalizada la forma de Hontaneda, y en tiempos posteriores y en los actuales, la de Ontaneda. Procede de la Montaña de Santander y probablemente es originaria del lugar de Ontaneda (cuyo nombre tomara) perteneciente al Ayuntamiento de Corvera y partido judicial de Villacarriedo. En pueblos como San Vicente de Toranzo y Alceda, que también pertenecen a los citados Ayuntamientos y partido judicial, tuvo casas solares, y una de sus ramas pasó a la villa de Escalante, del partido judicial de Santoña, quedando allí establecida. Natural y descendiente de la casa solar de San Vicente de Toranzo fué Hernando González de O., que casó con doña María Sainz Venero, natural de Alceda. Este matrimonio fijó su residencia en dicho lugar de Alceda, creando allí nueva casa que estaba pegante a la que fué
