La famiglia è tuttora uno dei Casati più insigni e longevi che ornarono d'illustri personaggi Piemonte Lombardia ed altre terre per oltre dieci secoli; anch'essi come i Curoli traggono origine attraverso i Cassano, loro diretti ascendenti, dai Manfredinghi e quantunque le prime notizie risalgano agli inizi del 1100 riteniamo che la famiglia esercitasse la propria potestà sui territori tortonesi ad essa infeudati sin dall'XI secolo, epoca in cui era già assai numerosa; è noto infatti che in tempi imprecisati a certamente antrriori al 1100, gli O. furono investiti dai vescovi di Tortona dei luoghi di Casasco e Magrassi situati sulla destra del torrente Curone.
