The family is of Spanish origin and had its cradle in Burgos of Cantabria not far from Medina of Pomar, in the jurisdiction of Losa. Chroniclers of Spain cite it among the most illustrious of old Castile and indulge in the mists of distant legend. The most reliable of these, the Sota, says that the Ordonos founded the ancient Abbey, the adjoining temple and the sumptuous palace of Rosales.
