La famiglia è di origine spagnuola ed ebbe sua culla in Burgos di Cantabria poco lungi da Medina di Pomar, nella giurisdizione di Losa. I cronisti di Spagna la citano fra le più illustri della vecchia Castiglia e si sbizzarriscono fra le nebbie della lontana leggenda. Il più attendibile fra costoro, il Sota, afferma che gli Ordono fondarono l'antica Abazia, il tempio annesso ed il sontuoso palazzo di Rosales. Ma poi i signori dell'Abazia si estinsero e l'eredità della stirpe e che sposò Ordogno Ordonez, signore di Lemos e Sarria, abiatico dell'Infante Don Ordono, detto il Cieco, a sua volta figlio di Ramiro III, re de Leon. (Sota: Storia degli antichi Principi di Cantabria, Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milano Lib. 3°, Cap. 45, pag. 443 e segg.). Così discendenti dell'Abazia di Rosales assunsero il nome illustre della stirpe degli Ordono, conservando con esso quello d'origine. E così pure l'antica rosa d'argento
