I genealogisti lucchesi fanno provenire i Mansi da Magonza, dei quali uno solo essendo rimasto in Lucca avrebbe dato, origine al motto della Casa. Manso di Gherardo è ricordato nei documenti fin dal 1085 come proprietario di beni terrieri donati ai Canonici di S.Martino. Nel secolo XII la famiglia era costituita da numerosi consortati, aventi il privilegio di approntare il conio delle monete alla zecca di Lucca; diritto che Lamberto di Masneri, console maggiore della città, cedè nel 1182, anche a nome dei consorti, al libero Comune. Nel secolo seguente fecero parte della cerna potentium, e furono per ciò banditi nel 1308 all'avvento della parte popolare. Ritornati in Lucca nel 1331 ebbero parte notevole nelle vicende della Repubblica per le alte cariche politiche sostenute, e per il numero degli Anziani e dei Gonfalonieri che dettero al governo dal 1394 al 1792.
