Los genealogistas de Lucca originan el Mansi de Maguncia, de los cuales solo uno que permaneció en Lucca habría dado origen al lema de la Casa. Manso di Gherardo se menciona en documentos desde 1085 como el dueño de propiedades de tierra donadas a los Cánones de S. Martino. En el siglo XII, la familia estaba formada por numerosos consorcios, que tenían el privilegio de preparar la acuñación de monedas en la casa de moneda de Lucca; el derecho que Lamberto di Masneri, el cónsul principal de la ciudad, cedió en 1182, también en nombre de sus consortes, al Municipio libre.
