Dice mosén Jaime Febrer que Bernardo de Horta tomó el apellido del lugar de que era natural, sin especificar cuál de los varios que hay en Cataluña del mismo nombre. Sirvió al rey don Jaime I de Aragón en la conquista de Valencia, y el citado monarca le premió con una casa grande y hermosa, sita junto a la mezquita mayor de la ciudad de Valencia. Cerca de la villa de Silla, que hoy pertenece al partido judicial de Torrente, en la misma provincia de Valencia, fue herido por un alfaquí muy esforzado. De nuevo lo encontró en Alcira y le desafió, venciéndole en campal palestra. Para premiar su esfuerzo y valor, el rey le concedió los lugares de Serra y Ría.
