Fin dal decimo secolo appariscono conti imperiali di Matelica. Allorquando Ottone I imperatore venne in Italia per combattere Berengario, due giovani matelicani, Lodovico e Pietro Da Ponte, si unirono a lui, e durante la guerra si segnalarono per siffatto modo, che dopo la vittoria, ebbero in Guidernone da lui la terra di Matelica colla facoltà di costituirla in principato, e presero il nome dell'Imperatore per cognome che lasciarono ai loro discendenti, fra' quali meritano di essere ricordati un Attone conte di Matelica, il quale, dopo aver sostenuto Ugo Re d'Italia, combattè nel 940 contro Arilcario duca di Camerino e di Spoleto, e ne uscì vittorioso, tuttochè rimanesse morto nella battaglia; un altro Attone seguace di Federico I e suo conte in Matelica, da cui fu cacciato a furore di popolo nel 1165 quando l'Imperatore, stremato di forze, fu costretto ad abbandonare l'Italia; Guarnerio e Franco, figli del precedente consoli di
