La famiglia è nobile ed antica romana. Si legge nell'Archivio Urbano un istromento di cambio che fa Giovanni Jdice de Cithera del Castello Malefetti per il casale che chiamato dell'Arco Tiburtino sotto li 5 novembre 1277 ove anche si legge una memoria dell'1491. Dell'1507 parentò colli Albertini come s'è detto nella detta Famiglia; dell'1520 colli Capocci, cioè parimenti s'è detto in detta famiglia e del medesimo anno colli Frangipani; dell'1562 colli Galliani, dell'1563 colli Americi, Muti e Palini, dell'1570, collli Valle. Carlo Muti con l'occasione della parentela di questa famiglia ne ha disteso l'albero, si vedono due lapidi sepolcrali nella Chiesa di San Gregorio di questa famiglia, la prima dice: Camilli de Cithera Nobilis Romani Hic Ossa Requiescunt Vixit Annos XXXX. Mens VI, Dies XXX, Anno D.ni MDLXX. L'altra dice: Dilectissimae Conjugi Hyeronimae de Valle Nob. Rom. Quae Vixit Annos LIII. Mens IV, Dies IV. Camillus de Cithera Nob. Rom.
