Die ersten Erinnerungen an diese berühmte Familie gehen auf das zehnte Jahrhundert zurück, und sie hieß Catanei da Pacengo, wo sie riesige Ländereien besaß und daher mit der cattaneanischen Würde geschmückt war. 1277 arbeitete er hart daran, Alberto della Scala in das Regiment von Verna zu erheben. Später wurde es in zwei immer noch blühende Zweige geteilt, der erste wurde von Cristoforo di Tommaso, dem Neffen von Donato, und der zweite von Ognibene, dem Sohn von Donato selbst, gegründet, die alle in den Adelsrat von Verona eintraten. Als Belohnung für die oben erwähnten Verdienste von Donato, dem Vater von Tomaso und Ognibene, verlieh ihm Kaiser Albert II. mit einer Urkunde vom 13. September 1438 den Titel eines Pfalzgrafen, der ihm dann von Friedrich IV., König der Römer, bestätigt wurde 9. August 1442. Lodovico Sagramoso trug 1605 die Kleidung der Malteserritter; Marco-Antonio erhielt die mantuanische Staatsbürgerschaft für sich und seine Nachkommen
