The first memories of this illustrious family date back to the tenth century, and it was called Catanei da Pacengo where it owned vast estates, and therefore decorated with the Cattanean dignity. In 1277 he worked hard to raise Alberto della Scala to the regiment of Verna. Later it was divided into two still flourishing branches, the first founded by Cristoforo di Tommaso, nephew of Donato, and the second by Ognibene, son of Donato himself, all of whom entered the noble council of Verona. To reward the services rendered to the Empire by Donato father of Tomaso and Ognibene mentioned above, Emperor Albert II with a diploma dated 13 September 1438 granted him the title of count palatine which was then confirmed to him by Frederick IV, king of the Romans on 9 August 1442.
