As primeiras memórias desta ilustre família remontam ao século X, e chamava-se Catanei da Pacengo onde possuía vastas propriedades, e por isso condecorada com a dignidade cataneana. Em 1277 trabalhou arduamente para elevar Alberto della Scala ao regimento de Verna. Mais tarde, foi dividido em dois ramos ainda florescentes, o primeiro fundado por Cristoforo di Tommaso, sobrinho de Donato, e o segundo por Ognibene, filho do próprio Donato, todos os quais ingressaram no nobre conselho de Verona. Para recompensar os serviços prestados ao Império por Donato pai de Tomaso e Ognibene acima mencionados, o Imperador Albert II com um diploma datado de 13 de setembro de 1438 concedeu-lhe o título de conde palatino que lhe foi confirmado por Frederico IV, rei dos romanos em 9 de agosto de 1442.
