Nella prima metà del secolo XVI appare questa famiglia in Cividale in persona di un D. Francesco quondam Girolamo Paciano, il quale creato notaio nel 1532 aprì una scuola privata di grammatica. Fino dal 1539 egli figura stipendiato dalla comunità con ducati 90 annui di salario quale pubblico maestro, posto che egli occupava ancora nel 1559 (Provved. sopra feudi, busta 493, Archivio di Stato Venezia). Buon poeta classico, Francesco ci lasciò in ottima lingua latina venticinque favole da lui dedicate nel 1526 al provveditore di Cividale Lodovico Michiel. Ebbe fama anche di valente oratore, e il comune di Cividale in occasione della morte della nobile Reicinda Formentini badessa di Santa Maria in Valle, lo delegò a recitarne l'elogio funebre. Si pensò da taluno ad una possibile derivazione dei Paciani cividalesi da una famiglia omonima di Modena, rappresentata verso la metà del secolo XVIII da un conte Cesare Paciani,
