In the first half of the sixteenth century this family appears in Cividale in the person of a D. Francesco quondam Girolamo Paciano, who was created a notary in 1532 and opened a private grammar school. Since 1539 he was paid by the community with 90 ducats a year of salary as public master, a position he still occupied in 1559 (Provved. sopra feudi, envelope 493, Venice State Archive). A good classical poet, Francesco left us twenty-five fables in excellent Latin which he dedicated in 1526 to the administrator of Cividale, Lodovico Michiel. He also had a reputation as a talented orator, and the municipality of Cividale, on the occasion of the death of the noble Reicinda Formentini abbess of Santa Maria in Valle, delegated him to recite the eulogy.
