En la primera mitad del siglo XVI esta familia aparece en Cividale en la persona de D. Francesco quondam Girolamo Paciano, que fue nombrado notario en 1532 y abrió una escuela primaria privada. Desde 1539 fue pagado por la comunidad con 90 ducados al año de salario como maestro público, cargo que aún ocupaba en 1559 (Provved. sopra feudi, sobre 493, Archivo del Estado de Venecia). Buen poeta clásico, Francesco nos dejó veinticinco fábulas en excelente latín que dedicó en 1526 al administrador de Cividale, Lodovico Michiel. También tenía fama de orador de talento, y el municipio de Cividale, con motivo de la muerte de la noble Reicinda Formentini abadesa de Santa María del Valle, lo delegó para rezar el panegírico. Alguien pensó en una posible derivación de los Cividalese Paciani de una familia del mismo nombre de Módena, representada a mediados del siglo XVIII por un conde Cesare Paciani,
