Antica ed illustre famiglia, originaria di Candiano. Tale cognominizzazione, anteriore al XIV secolo, dovrebbe derivare da soprannomi, legati al vocabolo paglia o per il mestiere o per vicinanze a località caratterizzate dalla presenza di fienili o pagliai. Tracce di tal cognome si hanno già in un atto del 1600, stilato in Cassino (FR): "...Capomastri d'Achi della Città di S. Germano da una parte, ed Benedetto Pagliari della medesima Città da un'altra parte;...". Tal casato ha dato alla Chiesa due esimii prelati: Clemente, creato Vescovo di Anagni nel 1857, e Mariano, Arcivescovo di Spoleto. Lo stemma della famiglia Pagliari scritta talvolta anche Pagliai si blasona così: Spaccato di azzurro e d'argento, alla fascia arcuata di rosso attraversante sulla partizione, accompagnata in capo da una stella di sei raggi d'oro, ed in punta da un monte di cinque cime di verde, sormontato da un leone al naturale, linguato di rosso, attraversante
