Famiglia di origine essenzialmente Toscana, e per essere più precisi di Lucca. Lo Zani, nell'accennare al celebre pittore Benedetto, affinchè non sia confuso con altri, dice precisamente: Pagniello, nè Pagani, nè Pogni Benedetto da Pescia, o Pexia. Questo pittore da Pescia fu in Roma scolaro del celebre Giulio Romano, e, conforme accenna il Vasari, si recò con lui a Mantova e ne fu collaboratore in molte opere; ed altre di propria invenzione ne condusse a termine, come quel S. Lorenzo che si ammira in chiesa di S. Andrea. Ritornato a Pescia, dipinse assai bene a fresco ed i suoi geniali lavori ammiransi ancora sulla facciata di casa Pagniello. A lui sopravisse l'altro pittore fiorentino Camillo. Visse in quel secolo meraviglioso, specialmente per l'arte pittorica, Cristofolo, notaio dell'auditore della Camera apostolica di Roma.
