Una antica tradizione fa derivare questa celebre famiglia da Guido, nipote di Ottone, il quale essendo andato nel 938 a Roma per farsi creare Imperatore, lasciò Guido in Italia dopo avergli conferito la contea di Romagna. Questi si fissò in Ravenna ove un suo nipote, avendo violata una donna, venne attaccato dal popolo ed ucciso unitamente al conte Guido e famiglia. Uno solo rimase salvo dall'eccidio, di nome Guidetto, il quale vendicò i suoi con orribile strage, onde ebbe il soprannome di Bevisangue e trasferì poi la sua dimora in Firenze. Appartenne a questa famiglia quell'Ildebrando, Vescovo di Arezzo, che fu Conte di Romagna nel 1291 e che pacificò i Polentani coi Colonnesi. Trapiantata questa famiglia in Toscana dal summenzionato Guidetto, quivi salì in gran potenza e si divise in molti rami che si distinsero fra loro dai nomi dei Castelli e delle Signorie di cui ebbero il dominio.
