Dall'arteria Genova-Tortona presso Arquata si dirama la rotabile che dalla valle dello Scrivia sale, fiancheggiando ora a dritta ora a manca il torrente Spinti, a Varinella, Variana, Grondona; a Variana, frazione di Grondona denominata anticamente V., un grappolo di case attorniava il sovrastante castello che già dal XII sec. e forse prima era soggetto al potere temporale del vescovo di Tortona conte di Voghera. La designazione del luogo fu per un certo tempo il predicato dei castellani che lo assunsero poi definitivamente come cognome, e come tali li troviamo citati in vari documenti; il 27 gennaio 1203 Giacomino del fu Anslemo di V. è teste in istrumento con cui Opizzone di Persi dona terreni al monastero di Rivalta, altra donazione, per la quale interviene come teste Oberto di V., è fatta il 20 ottobre 1203 da Rufino Pitterio allo stesso monastero; Guglielmo di V. è teste in atto del 6
