Antica ed assai nobile famiglia siciliana, conosciuta come Pajno o Paino, con residenza nella città di Palermo, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di autorevoli genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in un soprannome dialettale basato sul termine siciliano omonimo, con il significato di persona per la quale l'eleganza è fondamentale; secondo un'altra ipotesi, invece, deriverebbe invece dalla contrazione del nome Paglino, un ipocoristico di Paglia. Per il matrimonio di Ferdinando Paino e Ponzo con Giulia Macaluso e Tamaio, ereditiera del titolo di barone di Luccoveni, questo titolo passò al figlio di detti coniugi, Giuseppe (nato il 3 luglio 1845), marito (15 dicembre 1868), di Anna Benzo dei duchi di Verdura e padre di Ferdinando, nato a Palermo il 19 settembre 1869, e di Giulio Cesare Carlo, nato a Palermo il 1 gennaio 1864, marito di Stefania Spatafora dei principi di Spatafora.
