La famiglia trae la sua origine dall'Italia meridionale e precisamente dalla Provincia di Bari, dove ebbe dall'imperatore Federico II le investiture di due baronie di Bisceglie e Roccatagliata. Ancora al giorno d'oggi nella chiesa di S.Margherita in Bischeglie si conservano, fino dal secolo XIII, le tombe dei vari cospicui personaggi della famiglia Palconi, fra i quali quelle dell'Ammiraglio Guglielmo, capo dell'armata di Federico II. Dopo la rotta degli Imperiali, dal comune ceppo dei Palconi di Bari si staccò Fulco che andò a stabilirsi a Firenze dando vita a questa nobile discendenza che prosperò in varie città'. Fulco fu priore della libertà di Firenze nel 1328; Michelangelo fu commissario della repubblica fiorentina a Lucca nel 1360; Lando si portò per i suoi traffici a Bologna e nel 1357 lo troviamo fra gli anziani di quella città; Federico, lettore nello studio di Bologna nel 1360. Dandolo, anziano nel 1370; Bartolomeo nel 1385
