Famiglia ritenuta d'origine normanna, che avrebbe preso il nome dalla terra di Palma, anticamente posseduta, detta talvolta di Castiglione, dal possesso di un feudo di tal nome. Se ne trovano memorie sin dal 1190. Occupò alte cariche civili ed ecclesiastiche; fu reiteratamente ricevuta nel S. M. O. di Malta, sin dal 1300, ed ebbe nell'Ordine anche il Baliaggio di Venosa. Un ramo ottenne la concessione del titolo di marchese, sulla terra di Pietramelara. Godette nobiltà in Napoli, Nola e Messina, ed altro ramo fu ascritto alla Mastra Nobile di Messina nel 1743. Fu più volte riconosciuta di generosa nobiltà nell'ammissione nelle RR. Guardie del Corpo. I di Palma d'Artois, duchi, di S. Elia dal 1613, iscritti al seggio di Porto in Napoli, si estinsero in Maria Vittoria, ottava duchessa di S.
