Família cuja origem se desconhece mas que é anterior ao século XVI, sendo o apelido de origem geográfica, tirado da freguesia de P. no concelho de Alcácer do Sal. Em Óbidos houve uma família P. da qual foi José Carlos da P., natural da mesma vila, pessoa principal da terra, governador da praça de Castelo de Vide, excelente soldado e instituidor de um vínculo naquela vila do qual ficou por administradora sua filha D. antónia Luísa de Meneses da P.. Também houve pessoas deste apelido em Ceuta, onde governaram muitas vezes a praça, na ausência do marquês de Vila Real e forma capitães- mores.
