The surname Palmer is of English origin.It was a nickname given to a person who had been on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Palestine),from the Middle English,Old French 'palmer,paumer'(from the Latin 'palma' palm tree).A pilgrim from the Holy Land would generally bring back a palm branch as proof that they had actually made the journey.The name thus comes to signify 'palm-bearing pilgrim to the Holy Land'.There was however a vigorous trade in false souvenirs,and the term also came to apply a cleric who sold indulgences.The European cognitives of this name may be topographical in nature,referring to dwellers near a palm tree or grove.The corresponding French Paulmier and Paumier are not nearly so common in France as Palmer is within England.The legend of Sir Guy reads:"Where with my hands I hewed a house,Out of a craggy rock of stone,And lived like a 'palmer' poor,Within that cave myself alone".The name dates
