La famiglia è fra le più antiche famiglie nobile reggiane. Pare abbia tratto il nome da duna Terra chiamata della Palude, o Palude, o Paluda, detta anche Paludano, nella parte bassa del territorio reggiano, e che poi fu annessa a Mantova. Arme giusta: D'argento a due aghi da rete di rosso posti in croce di Sant' Andrea, col capo d'oro all'aquila coronata di nero. Detta famiglia era feudataria di questa terra, e da un documento del 1145 risulta che quel Castello era feudo di Guido. Da feudo dipendeva pure la valle di Montirone, che si trova a 5 miglia di là da Mirandola, e che fra Leandro Alberti nella sua "Italia" dice fosse l'antica località denominato "Campi Nacri" o forse Macri. Ardovino nel 1108 venne investito da Ermengarda, abbadessa del monastero di Giulia in Brescia, di alcuni terre in Bedollo, pertinenza del Castello, di cui egli era già
