Notizie di questa famiglia in Calabria si hanno sin dal 1202 con un Goffredo, possessore di beni nella terra d'Albidona, come da un documento della Badia di Cava, riportato dal Trinchera. Nelle prove di nobiltà all'Ordine Gerosolimitano presentate da Ignazio Soriano, che ebbe per madre una Maria Ferraro, questa famiglia risulta tra le feudatarie di Calabria dal 1282. Si divise in tre grandi diramazioni: la dinastia di Antonello, che ebbero dimora in Cosenza e poi in Catanzaro, passati all'Ordine di Malta come quarti del cav. Soriano; la famiglia baroni di Crima, che aggiunsero al proprio il cognome Acciaioli, residenti in Catanzaro; e la famiglia di Cosenza ed Acri dai quali deriva il ramo detto d'Epamimonda. Un documento, già riportato per i Ferrara del Salernitano, farebbe ritenere che siano gli stessi dei Ferrara di questa regione. Non prima dell'anno 1484 il ramo di Epamibonda comincia a distinguersi e continua con interrotta
