Antica ed illustre famiglia, detta Amodio od Amidei, tra le più nobili ed antiche di Firenze, che alcuni storici vorrebbero di origine romana. Di parte ghibellina, tal casato, si distinte per gli eminenti personaggi a cui diede i natali, per lo più di spicco nella politica locale: nel 1182 un messer Bongianni fu console di Firenze; nel 1233 un Amideo fu uno dei sette beati che fondarono l'ordine dei Servi di Maria; un Mario fu senatore della sua patria, nell'anno 1787, e più tardi un Domenico governatore della città. Domenico suo figlio ebbe il titolo di Marchese di Manganelli per successione de' Costa Grimaldi. Un cospicuo ramo del casato, come ricorda il Mugnos, dovette abbandonare la patria, in seguito alla battaglia di Montaperti e riparare in Sicilia. Un Giovanni, nobile fiorentino, ottenne dal re Manfredo la castellania di Trapani, dove i suoi discendenti col proprio merito, al dir di Minutoli,
