Uma tradição medieval ingênua já difundida na Toscana faria com que essa família descesse, sem dúvida uma das mais antigas e ilustres da região, por Pansa, cônsul e patrício romano, amigo de Cícero e advogado de Ottavio nas lutas com Marcantonio, que morreu em Marcantonio.
