Una ingenua tradizione medioevale già molto diffusa in Toscana farebbe discendere questa famiglia, che fu indubbiamente tra le più antiche ed illustri della regione, da una Pansa, console e patrizio romano, amico di Cicerone, e fautore di Ottavio nelle lotte con Marcantonio, morto a Bologna per ferite toccate nella battaglia di Castelfranco nell'Emilia. E' certo che potentissima per onori e per dominio, in Pistoia e nella montagna, era la casa panciatica sulla metà del secolo XI; ma i documenti non ci chiariscono se essa abbia origine longobarda, franca o latina. Il nome Panciatichi, qual nome di consorteria, era già stabilito sul principio del Sec. XII; e questo nome in uno colle tradizioni indurrebbe a ritenere che la famiglia derivi dalla gens Pansia, patrizia e consolare. Il Passerini, in Genealogia e storia della famiglia Panciatichi, dice: "Ben poche sono le famiglia italiane che possono andar superbe di fatti illustri al pari
