Very ancient and noble family, originally from the territory of Naples, formerly called Panis, often linked to events and maritime activities. Over the centuries, various members of this illustrious family spread to different regions of Italy, where they were welcomed in the important offices of the city where they lived. In the tenth century, in Venice, in an act relating to the treaty between the republics of Genoa and Venice we read: "... et per manum Ogerii Panis, notarii et scribe Ianuensis curie conscripta, Venetie Ianue quoque confirmedata ..". In the sixteenth century, Hercules of Captain Pompeo del Pane, wore the habit of the Order of S. Stefano di Toscana, and for many years he commanded with great praise a galley of his religion.
