La familia proviene de Terranova di Sicilia. Antonio María fue creado cardenal de la Iglesia de Santa Romana por el papa Pío IX en el consistorio del 27 de septiembre de 1861. El mismo pontífice con escrito del 27 de febrero de 1877 otorgó el título de conde transmisible al antepasado del cardenal (mpr.). El uso de este título fue autorizado por el Real Decreto de 26 de agosto de 1926, seguido del RR. LL. PÁGINAS. Dic 2 Delo el mismo año.
