Da remotissimo tempo signora del castello d'Elci, che poi nel XIII secolo fu dato in feudo ad un ramo della famiglia cui apparteneva un conte Ranieri d'Elci figlio di Manuello signore di Travale che si trova nominato in un atto del 6 Apr. 1256 esistente nell'Archivio di Firenze. Questo possesso fu confermato nel 1355 ai discendenti del primo investito dall'Imperat. Carlo IV, il quale creò pure conti palatini, e li protesse così efficacemente che pervennero a ricuperare l'assoluta padronanza del loro feudo. Il Granduca Cosimo I de' Medici li consolidò in tutti i loro privilegi, affrancandoli da ogni soggezione ed omaggio per la contea d'Elci, che rimase affatto separata dalla provincia di Siena. I P. godettero inoltre la signora di Volterra ed ebbero giurisdizione sopra i castelli di Travale, di Castiglione Berardi, di Frosini, di Gavorrano, di Giuncarico di Massamarittima, di Montemassi, di Sticciano, e di Castel della Pietra.
