Il barone Antonio Manno nel compilare la genealogia dei Cantoni di Sale li dice "oriundi da Pavia": effettivamente il primo documento reperito sul casato si riferisce ad una causa sentenziata dai consoli di Pavia il 10 aprile 1148 tra i Merelli ed i Del Borgo per proprietà contestate in Parpanese; tra i testi dell'atto è menzionato Syrus de Cantono (Doc. di Pavia relat. a Voghera, 28). Sono tuttavia presenti in numerose altre contrade, come ora vedremo, ove fondarono altrettanti nuclei famigliari ovunque stimati e preminenti. Nel 1181 Giovanni de Cantono abitante nelle vicinanze di "Toirago de Lucunaxe" appare nell'elenco dei contribuenti il fodro ed il giogatico nell'Oltrepò pavese ed in Lomellina (id., 58) a Tortona Aimerico de Cantono è teste in atto del 3 luglio 1223 con cui i conti di Sparvara e di Langosco deferiscono al podestà di Tortona e ad Andreotto Barbavara le loro vertenze col comune tortonese
