Antica ed assai nobile famiglia friulana, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. La prima citazione del cognome è in due atti notarili: il primo del 1338, i cui sono citati tale "Pancierino da Portogruaro" e suo figlio Candido, il secondo del 1351, in cui è citato l'altro figlio Benvenuto. Nel XIV secolo nasce a Portogruaro Antonio Panciera. Nel 1390 egli diviene segretario apostolico e nel 1392 vescovo di Concordia. Il primo settembre dello stesso anno Papa Bonifacio IX concede lo stemma della sua casata, i Tomacelli, a lui, suo padre, ai suoi fratelli e ai legittimi eredi. Nel 1399 l'imperatore Venceslao li nomina conti palatini, con il privilegio di creare notai. Nel 1400 viene loro conferita anche la cittadinanza udinese e, due anni più tardi, Antonio viene eletto Patriarca di Aquileia. Dopo un breve soggiorno a Cividale, il Patriarca Panciera sceglie come
