Le prime momorie di questa nobile famiglia rimontano alla prima metà del XIV secolo. Furono gonfalonieri di giustizia di patria Ventura di Jacopo nel 1542; Ruffino di lui figlio nel 1562 e Pier-Maria di Ventura di Ruffino nel 1616, e furono priori ed ufficiali di guerra Toniolo di Iacopo nel 1519, Lorenzio di Fiorentino nel 1556, e Matteo di un altro Fiorentino nel 1646. Francesco-Antonio Papiani, governatore per la S. Sede di Forlimpopoli, di Longiano, di Forlì e di Cesena, fu creato insieme al figlio Gioacchino conte palatino e cavaliere aurato il 25 maggio 1733. La famiglia Papiani fu inoltre aggregata alla cittadinanza e nobiltà di Bertinoro nel 1761. Un altro Francesco-Antonio, stato pretore di Spello, fu creato nel 1805 patrizio di quella città, e Giovan-Carlo Papiani, con decreto del granduca di Toscana Leopoldo II, in data 11 gennaio 1840 fu dichiarato, insieme a' suoi figli e discendenti, nobili di
