La famiglia trae le sue origini da Firenze e ne parlano il Villani e Paolo Mini. Si narra che tre fratelli Gherardini nel 1100, mandati in bando riparassero in Normandia, dove Maurizio Gherardini rese importanti servizii al Re Enrico II d'Inghilterra, e che Gherardo fosse nominato Conte di Kildaria e Vicerè d'Irlanda. Altro Gherardini da Firenze passò nelle Gallie, e diede nome alla famiglia dei Girardin, tuttora esistente. Gian Pietro, nipote di Lottaringio Gherardini del Vajo, nobile fiorentino, si trasferì nel Veronese. I suoi due figli Angelo e Gaspare nel 1633 e nel 1652 acquistarono nel Ducato di Modena ed in territorio di Reggio, l'uno i feudi di S. Paolo e Castelnuovo Sotto, e l'altro quelli di Bazzano Scurano e Pianzo.
